Lactation Cookies

The title alone should tell you why I have been MIA on this blog. Well, unless you’re like my niece and you hear lactation, but think laxative. Or, like my sister, who initially thought lactation cookies were . So, my husband and I had our first little one, a little boy. The first half of the pregnancy was incredibly rough.I lost about 10 lbs because I could not keep anything down. Things started looking up around week 17 or so and I was much better after that. However, I would still get nauseated from just being in the kitchen or smelling food while it cooked so food blogging was out of the question for me. Then, when he finally got here, I was so busy there was no way I could make anything decent. I’m now back in the kitchen on and off though and developing (but mainly adapting/adopting) recipes a lot more these days.

So, I made these cookies more for their dessert appeal than their ability to increase my milk supply. Our paediatrician seems convinced I have supply issues. I have entertained the idea (better to be safe than sorry) and I make sure I drink 3-4 L of water everyday as well as keeping up my morning oatmeal ritual. I also tried fenugreek for about a day but my stomach got so upset it was like morning sickness all over again so I quickly tossed out that idea. What has worked though is pumping more often. So I guess maybe I had a bit of a low supply after all. I can’t tell whether or not these cookies work because, I didn’t measure my output before and after. But I’ll say this. If I’m going to have dessert (which I almost always want now that my sweet tooth is back in full effect after the pregnancy), I might as well have these since they are yummy and full of the nutrients I need to make milk. My husband, sister, and niece have all been enjoying them as well. Albeit, watching carefully everyday to make sure they’re not making any milk (although I reassured them there’s no way they could start making milk).

This is the recipe I used.

Modifications I made:

1 cup all-purpose flour and 1/2 cup oat flour

1-1/4 cups dark brown sugar instead of white

raisins instead of chocolate chips

1 extra tbs each of brewer’s yeast and flaxseed

What I love most about this recipe is the flavour. You can tell these aren’t your standard oatmeal and raisin cookies, that there is a secret ingredient hiding somewhere, but if I didn’t tell you, you would never know what it wasimg-20170223-wa0006
