Firsts on the First

I’ve wanted to start a blog for about 8 years now, but never got around to it. I’m excited to be starting now and bubbling over with stories to share! I thought what better way to start than to give a recap of last year. There were many ways I could have organized this. I could have shared all the highlights, I could have focused on just the most memorable moments, I could have listed all the accomplishments. Since this post is going out on January first, I decided to share all my first time experiences of 2015. I’d love to hear about yours so be sure to share them in the comments below.

For the first time in 2015, I roasted a turkey breast and a leg of lamb! I was incredibly proud of my gyro-style leg of lamb and will repeat very soon. The turkey was pretty good, but that lamb was definitely the star of the show! I also made Jamaican potato pudding for the first time. It was also quite delicious and I can now cross that off my kitchen bucket list.

My husband, Zuri, and I went to quite a few places for the first time this year. We had our road trip to Chicago. The highlight of that trip was definitely the food. We tried Garrett’s popcorn for the first time, deep dish pizza (he did) and a street-style hotdog. We also went to a darling little boutique restaurant that specializes in all things pig. We were thinking about the food for weeks after dining there! We also visited family in Cleveland and went to the beach in Tobago while spending Christmas with Zuri’s family in Trinidad. The food on those trips was absolutely amazing, and I have 3lbs to show for all the delights!

I completed all my coursework for my doctoral program and will be ABD (All But Dissertation) in just a few weeks. Now, my primary focus for 2016 will be my dissertation. I might be a tad crazy starting a blog with such a big project looming overhead. But, I figure I will need a break from all the dissertation writing. This blog will provide the well-needed escape from all the academic writing and will be my way of injecting some fun to get those creative juices flowing.

I also got accepted to present my research at the largest education conference in the U.S. in April. Presenting at a conference before graduating was a major goal of mine.

I actually hit my target weight hovered for about four months and then shot right back up with the end of semester stress. Nevertheless, I hit several personal records in the gym this year on squat, bench press, and deadlift. I am quite pleased. I’ll keep working on getting back to that target weight and staying this time around.

We were asked to be godparents for a sweet little girl. While I have a godson and so does Zuri, this was the first time we were serving as godparents together. In February, we attended her christening and proudly promised before God and everyone present that we would be there for her no matter what. This really was a unique experience and it feels like a huge responsibility; but I would have it no other way. We have learned so much from her and we’re happy to be in her life. I only hope we can teach her fraction of what she has taught us.

Writing out these experiences was a great way to reflect on my 2015. It made me realize which areas of my life I needed to focus on for 2016 to have some new first time experiences. I’m all about personal growth and development on that path to self-actualization.

I’d love to hear from you about your firsts for 2015! Comment below to share!

  1. I enjoyed reading this your maiden post. Glad to see you doing what you love. The year 2015 was a very special year for me. Many firsts, but two were very profound for me; I took my then 9 month old princess home to Jamaica for the first time, Which would be my first time home as a father. Another first for me, was competing in my first ever long distance run (5k). I had so many other firsts in 2015 but those two…I am very proud of. Happy New Year Krayven Girl, I wish you the very best in ALL you do!
